This is the web site of Andrew Shanks, deceased. Andrew died suddenly on the 1st September, 2026. His funeral service was held at York Minster on the 22nd September followed by burial
in the church yard of All Saints, Hawnby.
This is one of the Upper Ryedale churches where Andrew was the parish priest between 1997 - 2004. It has been designated a poetry church. There are below tributes given at Andrew's funeral service along with others which were sent to his wife, Dian.

This is my website. It contains a bit about me; a list of significant
publications; and a mixed bag of sample texts.
These include: a tribute to the Ethiopian educational pioneer Asfaw
Yemiru; some philosophical reflections (an ‘anachronistic letter to
Spinoza’, a mapping of the ‘cardinal virtues of openness’; and a
scheme of ideal House of Lords reform, along the lines of
‘agapacracy’); and poetry translations from the German of Nelly Sachs
and Friedrich Hölderlin.
